Bjorn Criel

PhD student at Ghent University

Bjorn Criel is a PhD student in Yves Briers’ group, the Laboratory of Applied Biotechnology, at Ghent University. His research focuses on the development of bioinformatic and computational methods to engineer enzyme-based antibiotics (enzybiotics) that are derived from phage lytic proteins (endolysins and virion-associated lysins). For his master thesis, he created a database of phage lytic proteins: PhaLP. During his PhD, the database was further improved and made publicly available at www.phalp.org. We believe PhaLP can serve as a valuable resource for other researchers and companies in the field and thereby accelerate the development of new enzybiotics.
